Draft Day

January 18, 2008

the MLS Superdraft is today. ESPN2 will have an hour of coverage starting at 2p EST. Buzz Carrick of 3rd Degree has the deepest and best coverage of the players looking to get drafted. Ives Galarcep was down in Florida for the pre-draft combine and has the scoop on how the players performed over the three day event.

The Crew hold the 6th, 20th, and 48th picks. The team could certainly use attacking talent and defensive depth. Unfortunately, this draft is short on attacking talent. I suspect that the Crew are probably looking to plug some holes in defense or to trade some picks for some established talent.

On a local note, three members of Ohio State’s second place soccer team are in the draft. Playmaker Xavier Balc, central defender Eric Brunner, and winger Roger Espinoza are highly regarded talents. Brunner and Balc could go as high as mid first round. Espinoza looks to be a second round pick or later.

I plan on watching the draft tracker at work. I hope that the 2008 draft shapes up better than others. The Crew have not drafted well and only have Chad Marshall as an impact player from the last five drafts. That is a sad record.
