Game Day 1 – Crew 2 – TFC 0

March 30, 2008

The Crew supporters

The Crew’s performance today showed that Sigi Schmid’s plan may be coming together. The midfield, led by goal scorer Adam Moffat, and the solid effort by fellow goal scorer Alejandro Moreno ensured the Crew would start the season on a winning note. The dominant play by defensive leader Chad Marshall guaranteed a clean sheet. It was not pretty at times, but rather than collapsing or giving up a tying goal like last year; the team came together and got stronger down the stretch.

The goals were the type the Crew will have to specialize in this year. Adam Moffat showed a little bit of his long range shooting skills in last year’s friendly versus Tecos and last week’s friendly against Metapan. Brian Carroll showed great presence of mind to take a quick restart, finding Adam Moffat in space running down the center of the field. Moffat calmly took a long shot that found the left corner, just past the Toronto ‘keeper. Great decision making and skill put the Crew up 1-0. The second goal was another combination of decision making and skill. Eddie Gaven had settled the ball in midfield and struck a perfectly weighted ball to spring Moreno past the defense. The Moreno of last year may have rushed the shot and spoiled the opportunity, but this year he cooly slotted the ball past the ‘keeper to make it 2-0. The offense was not limited to the goal scorers. Robbie Rogers was a force on the wings. Guillermo Barros Schelotto added his veteran guile. This may not have resulted in goals, but they will have their chances next week.

The defense played like they needed to. Marshall was a giant in the heart of the defense. He paired well with Danny O’Rourke in the center of the defense. Miglioranzi and Hejduk held down the wings. Toronto forward Jeff Cunningham had very little space all game. Moffat’s penalty kick clearance and Rogers’ goal line save showed great awareness on both of their parts. This team effort is important. My only concern were the patches of poor possession especially at the beginning of both halves. Moffat and Carroll will have to impose themselves on the game and settle the team during stretches of defensive pressure.

I really don’t have too many complaints. It was a great way to open the season. Anytime the team scores a couple of goals, keeps a clean sheet, and the fans create a great atmosphere I am going home happy. The evidence is below:
