The Columbus Crew reserves dominated the University of Alabama-Birmingham  soccer team in route to a 4-0 win. Guillerme So started things off with an bicycle kick for a goal in the 10th minute. Rookie George Josten followed 2 minutes later with a volley past the UAB ‘keeper to make it 2-0. The defense held strong throughout the first half as the Crew pressed the attack. Lenhart came on for So around the 30th minute and Ryan Junge had to leave with a thigh injury shortly after. The Crew played with 10 men until the end of the half while maintaining the bulk of possession.

The second half saw the Crew make several substitutions and maintain edge in possession it had in the first half. The team was unable to translate dominance into goals until a couple of second half subs entered the game. Josten reappeared and came on for So. So injured his left hand earlier and immediately went into the training facility upon being subbed. Assistant coach Mike Lapper made an appearance coming in for Ryan Miller. Within minutes Lapper ripped off a cross that Lenhart connected on to make it 3-0. A few minutes later Ezra Hendrickson lofted a ball into the box that Garey finished to extend the lead to 4-0 to close out the scoring.

Notes: So continued to have trouble with positioning. He floated wide and deep quite a bit and I heard the coaching staff directing him to stay higher and to move inside. There is no doubting his skills however, he is very good on the ball. Lenhart had several chances to score but could only connect with one. He showed a very high work rate, but is certainly more of a project. Iro moved pretty well. His decision making seemed a bit slow, but UAB really did not press the attack so I did not get a very good look at him. Andrew Peterson was very active on the wings. He has some skill and pressed the attack early. Josten crossed the ball well in limited opportunities.
