Game 13 – Grades

June 23, 2008

Hesmer – 6: He looked to be at fault on the first goal. A keeper needs to go strong at a ball near the box. He also came out quite early on a few balls, perhaps a bit too far on some. I did think his distribution was quick and short quite a bit. This helped maintain some possession rather than a long boot to an isolated Moreno

Junge – 5: He did improve towards the end of the game, but early on he could not handle Beckham or an overlapping Chris Klein. LA had numerous chances throughout the first half.

Marshall – 7: Played another solid game in the center. He was strong in the air and really did not allow Donovan or Buddle much space. His clearances concern me as he has a tenancy to shank the ball and invite more pressure.

O’Rourke – 5: The phantom penalty is not the problem. He was beaten on the second goal and looked lost in central defense. He also tended to boot the ball aimlessly this game.

Hejduk – 6: A solid game from him, but he was rash in his challenge on Buddle that led to the third goal. His distribution and crossing was scattershot. Playing behind Hernandez probably did not help. His blast at Cronin did lead to the Lenhart goal.

Rogers – 7: Was a terror on the right side all night as he wore Klein ragged. He made an impact without getting on the score sheet. He was a little late getting back on defense at times, but that is a minor quibble.

Evans – 6: He is more of an offensive player, but really did not play well with the rest of the offensive unit. He also does not track back well. He was in the right place at the right time to bag a goal, thus the slightly inflated grade.

Carroll – 7: Carroll was all over the field, I did not notice the central midfield of LA. I even saw him get into the attack.

Hernandez – 4: I hope that was rust, because that was pretty ugly performance. My wife noticed him running around and wondered why he was wasting so much energy for no reason.

Schelotto – 6: He did not have the biggest impact, but he picked his spots and converted the penalty. Unfortunately, none of those spots were when he was lining up some corner kicks.

Moreno – 7: A great effort and got around goal a couple of times, but his best chance was sent well wide. He worked very well on the wing after Hernandez was subbed,

Lenhart – 7: Only on for a little over 10 minutes, but made an impact. He picked up a goal in a return home.. The local boy makes good.

Crew Man of the Match – Rogers – Rogers wore down Klein and ultimately made him an Xavier pay to set up two goals.
