Feilhaber to the Crew?
OK, that is a bit misleading, but it is a nice game of what if. Benny Feilhaber is reportedly in talks to come to MLS. With Lewis going to LA with the first allocation and Gibbs going to Colorado with the second allocation, Feilhaber would fall to the third allocation spot, currently held by New England. The Crew recently had the spot, but traded it to the Revs (plus a 1st round draft pick) for Pat Noonan and the Revs 10th place allocation.
I am excited to have Noonan, but I wonder what might have been if the Crew would have had Benny and a first round pick next year. My first reaction gave me a little heartburn, but I feel a little bit better about the situation after a few minutes. Noonan is very versatile and the Crew’s record for draft picks is not very good. Noonan is also a better fit for a team trying to push for a deep run in the playoffs and towards a championship. I would feel more comfortable about the team if the defense starts to solidify and stops giving up goals.
Update: It looks like Feilhaber is going to Denmark after all, so all the postulating is moot.
