Forbes: Crew Are In 12th Place

September 9, 2008

Forbes has done an independent study of MLS finances for the first time. Forbes often does calculations of other sports teams and now it is MLS’s turn to go under the microscope. MLS is doing quite well, but the Crew have fallen behind other teams in revenue and operating income, supposedly losing a league high 4.5 million dollars last year. They are rated as the 12th most valuable team in the league. San Jose was not ranked.

These are troubling statistics, but there are some mitigating circumstances. Bill Archer recently summed how the Crew got where it is now with former GM Jim Smith destroying a good organization and the losing teams of the last couple of years have really hurt sponsorships. However, attendance is good and getting better this year, the team also has a major sponsorship with Glidden paint and the stage has been put to use this year with several concerts landing in Crew Stadium. The numbers look bleak, but I think the Crew have the leadership and product to return to financial respectability.
