Local Ownership Options

September 30, 2008

I am trying to think about some local ownership options. This would be the best way to keep the team in town, but I am not coming up with a lot of names.

Randy Lerner: The top choice that springs to mind for a “local” owner. He owns Aston Villa in England and is wealthy enough to afford the Crew as he is worth 1.3 billion dollars. He has shown no interest in getting involved in MLS though.

Robert Walter: The retiring founder of Cardinal Health has enough money, but has not been involved in the Columbus community aside from some work with the Columbus Museum of Art. He is probably not an option either.

Les Wexner: Wexner is a pillar of the community, but he is much more involved in the arts scene. He does not seem to be involved in the sports scene around town.

Eric Clapton: He apparently takes in a game at the stadium, but probably would not want to sink large amounts of money into a hobby like soccer. He would have to join a consortium. I don’t see him as a likely option either.

Dave Chappelle: Just kidding, Columbus is too far away from his Yellow Springs home.

I would love to see Randy Lerner buy the team. I think that is a long shot as he is pretty busy with the Browns and Aston Villa. If anyone has any other local ownership ideas, drop them in the comments.
