Cup Action

March 9, 2009

The long rumored decision on sites for this year’s Gold Cup will be announced today. Shawn Mitchell is reporting that Crew Stadium will be hosting a couple games. I am excited to see Columbus picked for an international competition, even if it is the Gold Cup in an off year, where the champion doesn’t even get to go to the Confederations Cup. After the threat that the U.S. v. Mexico match was rumored to be heading for Salt Lake; I am happy to see Columbus get another higher profile game.

They probably won’t announce the matchups until later, but I would be surprised if the U.S. National team comes to Columbus again. They will probably stay towards their home base in Los Angeles if they can do anything about it. The best remaining draws would probably be the Central American teams such as Honduras. While there is a somewhat sizable Mexican community in town, there are plenty other immigrants in Columbus or the area. Drawing in these fans will be the best way to get a good gate.
