Play the Game (or Else)

April 13, 2009

I generally dislike the quality of MLS refereeing. I think most referees will call too many fouls and be slow to go to the cards. This breeds hacks and careless play. This allows for players like Dema Kovalenko or Paulo Nagamura to have a career in MLS or players like Atiba Harris or Conor Casey to swing elbows without fear of penalty. It brings down the quality of the game.

On that note, I was glad to see Dan Loney’s recap of the Chivas USA v. Galaxy match. Yes, there were cards galore, but it sounded like the players should get a clue. Stop the silly fouls, stop the rough tackles, stop ruining the game or you will get a card. If the referees stay the course and if the players adapt (two big ifs), the payoff will be some great flowing soccer without the cheap fouls.
