Crew Add Striker?

July 28, 2009

As broken by “JB the First” on Big Soccer, the Crew are tracking Venezuelan forward Emilio Renteria. Even though Renteria just signed a new contract with Caracas FC two weeks ago, a half dozen news reports put him moving north to join countryman Alejandro Moreno and the Crew.

Shawn Mitchell tried quell any rumors about the transfer saying that Renteria would have to trial first and that his signing a contract would prevent the deal from happening. Either that was misdirection on part of the Crew or the player’s agent is trying to drum up some interest in his player.

Crewture blogger Danndamanny now adds an rumor that Renteria 99% certain to come to Columbus. With all of the press that this possible signing is getting in Venezuela , I would not be surprised to see this rumor turns out to be true.

Renteria has played in Copa Libradores and has one appearance with the senior Venezuelan National Team, this year in Friendly on February 3rd against Haiti. He also has 11 appearances with Venezuelan youth squads. He is short to average height, reports ranging from 5 foot 7 inches tall to 5’10”, and plays a physical, hardworking game. He is a copy of the three other forwards the Crew have.

Ideally, I would love to see the Crew add a player with a little bit of pace, but Renteria is a player that has Cup and international experience and is also youthful, turning 25 in October. I don’t see him being a game breaker, but he will add depth to the front line just as fixture congestion becomes an issue.
