Ta-Ta to TFC (See Ya Next Year)

August 4, 2009

Toronto wasn’t able to overcome a one goal deficit in their home and home game with the Puerto Rico Islanders tying 0-0 at Puerto Rico. This means the group stage is (all but) set. Cruz Azul will probably by the fourth team in CONCACAF’s group of death, joining the Islanders, Saprissa, and the Crew.

The Islanders, led by former Crew keeper Bill Gaudette, bunkered and held off a semi potent Toronto offense to win on the away goal they scored last week in Toronto. I am excited that the Islanders knocked off Toronto, and not just because my friend Javier will get to see his home town team. This would be the 4th and 5th game we would have played against them, there would have been a good chance they would have knocked off the Crew.

As it stands, the Islanders have proven they are no slouches when it comes to MLS competition. They went deep into last year’s event and have already beaten one MLS opponent this year. Also, Puerto Rico is a (relatively) cheap flight away. Tickets are under $300. So congrats to the Islanders, see you guys on the 18th at Crew Stadium.
