Renteria In the Fold

August 20, 2009

Venezuelan forward Emilio Renteria has officially joined the Crew. He was out of contract, most recently with Caracas FC. Renteria has Copa Libradores experience and has three goals for the Venezuelan national team, all in friendlies. He joins the four other forwards on the team vying for playing time.

I have only caught glimpses of him on Monday’s reception and before Tuesday’s game and he is built like a football player. Without seeing him play, I can’t say for sure how he is going to fit in with the team. He’s reportedly fast, powerful, and not afraid to shoot. With those attributes, he would be an excellent late game sub trying to kill off a game or a quick forward to play off of Moreno or Lenhart. His speed is something the Crew doesn’t have in the forward position.

The Venezuelan hopes to be ready to play by the time the Crew take on Cruz Azul next week. I had hoped to see him in action, but practice was cancelled yesterday. I will head down to Obetz, if the Crew hold a rare Sunday practice.
