Rogers, Moreno, and Hejduk, Oh My

October 7, 2009

The Dude was called up with Rogers to the US National team, Moreno will join Venezuela this week, Marshall is still out injured, and O’Rourke is suspended. That is five normal starters. Even with a week’s rest, the Crew will be shorthanded in New England. Defensively, the Crew could use the mettle provided by Hejduk, Marshall, and O’Rourke. The more interesting question is whether this hurts or helps the offense.

Moreno and Rogers have been out of form this season. Moreno is a workhorse that draws fouls. Referees are reluctant to call the fouls he’s trying to draw. He has also shown a penchant for going down a little too easily. This will open the door for Lenhart to push for a larger role in the offense as the playoffs approach. Emilio Renteria is also waiting for that chance. Both Lenhart and Renteria must be eager to show what they can do is given the chance.

The Crew are not as deep on the wing. Ekpo, Gaven, and Rogers have rotated depending on fatigue and opponent. All have shown signs of brilliance, but Rogers seemingly has lost the form that made him a Best XI pick last year. He looks slow, unable to use his speed to his advantage. Without the ability to blow by people, Rogers has had to rely on his dribble to get around defenders. Often, this has let him down. This has meant the Crew have not had a consistent threat on the right side.

Warzycha has shown he will juggle the lineup as needed. Both Rogers and Moreno may find themselves in unfamiliar roles on the subs bench as the playoffs approach unless they regain the spark they added to the offense. This is a deep team, meaning a replacement is never more than a call to the bench away.

He scored 3 goals and had 5 assists since Gold Cup. Not sure what being out of form means? Rogers has pretty much driven the offense for several weeks. I don’t think Coach RW is foolish and will sit a key part of the team unless he wants to find a quick exit in the playoffs.

I think the more important question is what happened to GBS this season? He started off fast but has had trouble since he long layoff with injuries. I tend to think part of that is due to lack of service from the center mids. Evans is missed.

Soccer is a team sport? I must tell you reading Guldan makes me wonder. Not a player just an observer…..Each of the names players above have made contributions to getting crew where they are 2009. Unless you are a surgeon I would give up the dissection and look at the whole picture.
