Crew Make Winter Moves (Soon)
Earlier this week I was concerned at the lack of movement by the Crew this winter, but now Mitchell is reporting that the team is prepared to resign two free agents, defender Jed Zayner and forward Jason Garey. Mitchell also hints that Schelotto will be back. It’s the first concrete signs of the direction the team will be going in the offseason. With a tight cap; it looks like the 2010 Crew will look like the 2009.
I expected Zayner to get a new deal; he’s a young player that the staff is high on. He is a future starter on the Crew defense, possibly as soon as next year. I have been impressed with his growth as a player and I am glad that the Crew were able to lock up someone who has made Columbus his home.
However, I am a little surprised that Garey is getting a new deal. He has consistently been last on the forwards depth chart with Schelotto, Moreno, Lenhart and Renteria ahead of him. With Moreno gone and Schelotto’s situation up in the air, the Crew must have wanted certainty at the forward spot. It’s also possible that they may use him in a trade or still have the option to cut him if the situation changes.
I am still not sure how to read Mitchell’s comment on Schelotto.
Guillermo Barros Schelotto is the other, and a new agreement (…) is hoped to be reached before the holidays
Is a deal realistically in sight or is the team just hoping to get him signed before his deal runs out at the end of the month. It seems a little odd to pre announce two deals before they are signed and not another. Schelotto’s contract talks must not be at the advanced stage of having terms agreed. It’s still a hopeful sign.
One thing is clear, with the raises that several players got, there is not a lot of money left to spend on this team. I cannot see a big foreign signing at forward with so little left on the cap. The offense in 2010 will have to come from last year’s players and that did not work out so well at times.
