Zayner Re-signs

January 7, 2010

Zayner Locks in With Crew (

Just got the news, Jed Zayner has officially re-signed with the Crew. It’s a four year contract with terms not disclosed.

It has been all but official for weeks, but getting Zayner resigned is important for the 2010 season and beyond. After three injury filled seasons, Zayner had his breakout season last year, playing in 20 games with 16 starts. He filled in all across the back line playing mostly right back in Hejduk’s absence.

It’s especially good news that the Crew is locking up a solid and versatile defender like Zayner. He may not have been the offensive threat that Hejduk was, but Jed was a steady presence on the back line. His defense was outstanding and he did show an ability to get forward on occasion.

This looks like a deal for the future, but with Champions League and the World Cup, Zayner will be an important part of the team. It’s also possible that he may take the right back job outright. He looked like the better player towards the end of the year as Hejduk wore down and Jed kept improving. While Hejduk struggled with his defensive responsibilities, Zayner looked smooth as he locked down the right side.

No matter if he is part of a rotation or is looked to start, with nearly 40 games to play, Zayner will have a vital role for the 2009 Crew and beyond.
